Omg what a day.
First off, we had our final group meeting. Layla gave us a really great crash course in avalanche safety.
The real gem of the day was Pudding, Nacho, and Wheelz. They spent a few hours rehearsing a song. Nacho played recorder, Pudding played guitar, and Wheelz played a washboard. They had reheated “Send Me on My Way” by Rusted Root.
It was delightful. Live music is great. Live music you’re invited to join in on is better. Live music by people you adore is the best.
It was the best.
We talked music and played and sang random stuff for a bit and it was just such a delight. I can’t believe how much I like these people. Wheelz and I talked a lot and found out just how much we have in common. Nacho and I bonded a ton. Puds and I just vibed and enjoyed our time.
It’s really magical to be out here and words and photos can’t capture it. It’s a feeling built on experiences and connections. It’s like a had-to-be-there moment or joke. There’s something visceral that connects with the moment that can’t be recreated or recorded.
Afterwards, Sinead and I went back to Triple Crown Outfitters for our resupply. When we got back I heard a scream of excitement and Shopper was running full force at me.
I love this guy.
We caught up about the conditions in the Sierra. He made it to Bishop but he was so far ahead of the other hikers he got lonely and hitched back to Kennedy Meadows.
It was so great to see him and hug him. His energy is the kind that lifts you and everyone else up.
It was time for bed though. We have a huge day tomorrow. The itinerary is set, the departure times are as solid as they can be, and I’m champing at the bit to get out.
It’s a one-of-a-kind kind of experience. Definitely visceral and hard to put into words: because it’s mostly feelings, and how people make you feel, and how you make other people feel. Connections like that are magical.
